5 minutes build your own private AI assistant

If you ever encounter connection difficulties after subscribe to ChatGPT plus, or often exceed the usage time. If you have some confidential content, you are worried about leaking it out to public AI. If you want to have your own set of LLM AI, you can use it without time restrictions, and you can also analyze the documents you provide. Further, you hope the installation is extremely simple.

Then you should read this article, it’s my real practice. Spend 5 mins to read it may save you two more days in finding the right fit solution.

Last weekend, I spent two full days installing and testing the most popular independent AI large model system for my research and daily work, which includes Text_generation_webui, LM Studio, GPT4ALL, lo calGPT, privateGPT and other open source suites.

1. GPT-4All: This AI language model is designed to be user-friendly and accessible for everyone, with a simple interface that doesn’t require technical expertise. It offers customization options, real-time responses, advanced features like contextual understanding and creative output, and competitive pricing. However, it may have fewer customization options compared to OpenAI’s models and limited creative output capabilities. Downloadable from https://gpt4all.io/index.html

2. GPT-4: This is a highly advanced AI language model that excels in generating creative content and understanding contextual nuances.  GTP4 is a paid AI service, but its stability and usability are seriously questioned by me. When I use GPT4, I often encounter exceeding the upper limit of use, or disconnection, or no system response. With a fee-paying service, the overall user experience is not very good. Data privacy is also another issue.

3. localGPT: This is an open source, although the community make it easy to install, but it still requires you have some technical skill. Take a loot at their home page at GitHub, then you understand what I mean. Downloadable from https://github.com/PromtEngineer/localGPT

4. LM Studio:  This is a easy to use AI platform that allows users to download and activate LLM models.  It offers more control over the model’s parameters, but it requires technical knowledge and may not be as user-friendly or accessible for those without coding experience.    Downloadable from https://lmstudio.ai

5. Text_generation_webui: This is a simple web interface that allows users to use existing LLM model or train their own LLM models.   It also support LoRAs.    Their vision is to become a flexible and comprehensive web ui for LLM.     It provides a lot more parameters than GPT4ALL but requires some more technical skill to make it work.  Downloadable from https://github.com/oobabooga/text-generation-webui

Advantages of using GPT4ALL

1. User-Friendly Interface: Unlike other AI language models that require technical knowledge, GPT-4All offers a simple and intuitive interface that makes it easy for anyone to use.

2. Customization Options: With GPT-4All, you can tailor the model’s responses based on your specific needs. Whether you need assistance with work tasks or personal projects, GPT-4All is highly adaptable and customizable.

3. Real-Time Responses: Our AI language model generates human-like responses in real time, allowing for seamless interaction and instant feedback.

4. Advanced Features:  Despite its user-friendly design, GPT-4All packs advanced features like contextual understanding, creative output, and the ability to learn from previous interactions.

5. Affordable Pricing: It’s free

Conclusion and recommended solution

  • Hardware: It is recommended to use Apple Silicon M system chip for MacBook Pro with 32GB+ memory. Most higher quality LLM requires at least 16GB GPU memory, even 24GB. Windows PC can also be used as a container for AI, but the cost of a high-end GPU card is very expensive. Silicon chip MacBook Pro uses unify memory technology makes it a better choice for AI work.
  • Software: GPT4ALL (download and install, any newbie can use it in minutes)
